The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville announced the opening of its new $23 million Cancer Institute.
The 108,000-square-foot facility is nearly triple the size of the medical center's previous cancer center, reflecting an increase in cancer cases treated at the medical center and a projected 45 percent increase of cases nationally over the next two decades, according to the release.
The center offers a range of outpatient cancer treatments in one location and space for cancer research for The University of Tennessee Medical Center and UT Graduate School of Medicine.
The Cancer Institute houses the breast center, an imaging center, treatment and chemotherapy areas, a laboratory, clinical offices, conference rooms and space for services such as acupuncture and massage therapy. The new building will also include the radiation oncology department, which is moving from the medical center and will feature its CyberKnife Stereotactic Radiosurgery System and linear accelerators. The department move is scheduled for completion in early 2013.
