Nebraska Gov. Criticizes University's Funding Requests to City for $370M Cancer Center

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman is criticizing the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, claiming NU President J.B. Milliken is seeking more funds from local government for a new $370 million cancer center than was planned, according to an Omaha World-Herald report.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, the teaching hospital for UNMC, announced plans for a $370 million cancer research and treatment center in January.

Gov. Heineman says Mr. Milliken indicated he would seek $50 million from the state and the remaining funds would come from private contributions. In addition to $50 million from the state, NU will receive $120 million in debt issued by The Nebraska Medical Center for the project. Mr. Milliken says NU has always maintained the remaining $200 million would come from private or other sources, according to the report.

NU has requested funds from Douglas County and City of Omaha for the project. Douglas County has committed $5 million in inheritance tax revenue and the Omaha City Council is considering a new cigarette tax to generate $35 million for the project, according to the report.
