What States Have Highest Hospital CEO Turnover Rates?

The national hospital turnover rate marginally increased in 2012 to 17 percent, up from 16 percent in 2011, according to a report by the American College of Healthcare Executives.

However, many states have hospital CEO turnover rates much greater than 17 percent. The following are the states with the highest hospital CEO turnover rates in 2012, including short-term, non-federal general medical and surgical hospitals:

1. Washington, D.C.: 43 percent
2. Rhode Island: 30 percent
3. Idaho: 29 percent
4. Arkansas: 28 percent
5. Arizona: 26 percent
6. Tennessee: 25 percent*
7. Nevada: 24 percent
8. North Carolina: 24 percent*
9. Florida: 24 percent*
10: North Dakota: 23 percent
11. Colorado: 23 percent
12: Oklahoma: 23 percent
13. Texas: 22 percent*
14. Montana: 22 percent
15: Louisiana: 22 percent
16. Puerto Rico: 20 percent
17. South Carolina: 19 percent

* These states had more than 23 turnovers; therefore, the rates were adjusted by the ACHE to account for interim and acting CEOs who were in their post for a short time.

ACHE's data is based on CEO changes reported to the American Hospital Association.
