Partners HealthCare names new CEO to succeed Dr. Gary Gottlieb

Boston-based Partners HealthCare has named its next CEO: David Torchiana, MD, current chairman and CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, according to a Boston Business Journal report.

Dr. Torchiana will assume his new role in March, succeeding Gary Gottlieb, MD. After leading 10-hospital Partners for 10 years, Dr. Gottlieb is leaving to lead Partners in Health, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care in impoverished counties. (Despite the similarity in name, Partners in Health is not affiliated with Partners HealthCare.)

Dr. Torchiana has led the MGPO since 2003, the largest group practice in New England with more than 2,000 physicians. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1981, completed residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and joined the hospital's department of surgery in 1989.

Dr. Torchiana became chief of cardiac surgery at MGH in 1998 before assuming his role as CEO of MGPO. He is also an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School.

"Dr. Torchiana possesses the instincts and the political savvy to be an outstanding leader for Partners," Edward Lawrence, chairman of the Partners HealthCare Board of Directors, said in a statement. "He has an appreciation for each institution within the Partners HealthCare system and all the remarkable people who dedicate themselves to the mission every day. During times of uncertainty in the healthcare environment, Dr. Torchiana will be a leader who provides stability and lends a voice of assurance that Partners HealthCare wants to help address the challenges and be part of a solution."
