Mercy Health announces COO James May's retirement, 6 executive moves

Cincinnati-based Mercy Health has announced the retirement of James May, the system's COO, as well as the appointment of six executives.

Mr. May has served as the COO of Mercy Health for the last 13 years. He achieved many accomplishments during his tenure, including the creation of the first accountable care organization within Mercy Health, located in Cincinnati; turnarounds in three other Mercy Health markets; the creation and direction of numerous system-wide transformational efforts implemented within the last two years, among others.

Mercy Health has also announced the appointment of six executives, effective Jan. 5, 2014.

John Starcher will rejoin Mercy Health as executive vice president of operations. In this role, he will be responsible for the Cincinnati and Springfield, Ohio and Paducah, Ky., markets. He will also serve as president of Mercy Health in the Cincinnati Market. He previously served within Mercy Health as CEO of multiple markets and in several senior positions within human resources and legal.

Yousuf Ahmad, DrPH, will become senior vice president of system development of Mercy Health. He currently serves as president and CEO of Mercy Health in the Cincinnati Market.

Deborah Bloomfield is being promoted to executive vice president and CFO of Mercy Health.

Jerry Judd is being promoted to senior vice president and treasurer of Mercy Health.

Jane Durney Crowley, currently serving as executive vice president of clinical integration and business development, will becomes executive vice president and chief transformation officer.

Brian Smith, currently the executive vice president of north markets, will become executive vice president of operations and continue to oversee performance improvements in the system's Toledo, Lorain and Youngstown Markets, Mercy's relationship with Summa Health System and will add oversight for the Lima Market.

This strong group of senior leaders, along with our other executive management team members, will continue to transform our ministry," said Michael Connelly, president and CEO of Mercy Health.
