Former Parkland CMO Hired by Chicago's Public Health System

Cook County Health & Hospitals System has hired John Jay Shannon, MD, to fill a top-level executive position, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

In the unnamed position, Dr. Shannon will oversee operations at Stroger Hospital in Chicago as well the entire system's quality and patient safety performance, according to the report. The appointment is part of reorganization at Cook County Health System, according to the report.

Dr. Shannon previously served as CMO of Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, a position he resigned from last summer. During his time at Parkland, investigators found many patient safety violations at Parkland Memorial Hospital, including infection control deficiencies and improper nursing staff levels, among others.

Despite the problems at Dr. Shannon's former post, Ramanathan Raju, MD, CEO of Cook County Health System, maintains Dr. Shannon is right for the position. "I am convinced [Shannon] is the right person for the job at Cook County," Dr. Raju told the Chicago Tribune.
