Diane Cecchettini, RN, has served as president and CEO of MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, Wash., since 1999. She is the first woman and nurse to hold the CEO position in the five-hospital system's history. Ms. Cecchettini has been with MultiCare since 1989.

Prior to joining MultiCare, Ms. Cecchettini was with Sutter Health System in Sacramento, Calif., and UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

During her time with MultiCare, Ms. Cecchettini has played a major role in several initiatives focused on improving the quality of care for patients throughout the system — and her hard work has paid off. "Our staff and physicians at MultiCare hospitals are committed to providing our patients and our community the highest quality care. This award recognizes the dedication and hard work that drives our care and focus on patient safety," Ms. Cecchettini said in a release.

Ms. Cecchettini also oversaw the purchase and addition of Auburn (Wash.) Medical Center to MultiCare in October 2012.

In addition to her healthcare leadership experience, Ms. Cecchettini also has experience as a military leader. She served in the Air Force Reserve for 21 years as a flight nurse in aeromedical evacuation, until retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1993.

Ms. Cecchettini earned a master's degree in human resource management from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
