CEO David Brooks: Physician Alignment Advocate at St. John Hospital and Medical Center

For David Brooks, former CEO of Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Wash., aligning with physicians is not just a bullet point on a to-do list. It's a "prime strategy."

Mr. Brooks oversaw all major functions of the hospital, which includes nearly 800 medical staff members. In a recent white paper (pdf), he discussed that although employed physicians are a small portion of the entire medical staff, they are vital to the hospital's long-term health.

"Growing the Providence Physician Group has become a prime strategy," he wrote. "We believe that employment is one of the most effective ways to bring new specialists in and to retain specialties that otherwise would have left the market."

In addition, Mr. Brooks emphasized Providence's "one of everything" approach to aligning physicians: The hospital has joint ventures with independent physicians, a physician hospital organization, employed and contracted physicians serving as leaders of the hospital's clinical departments, co-management agreements and more.

Prior to Mr. Brooks' role at Providence Regional Medical Center, he was the COO of Central DuPage Health in Winfield, Ill. He has also served in executive leadership roles at Christus Health in Irving, Texas, Lovelace Health System in Albuquerque, N.M., and Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.

Mr. Brooks is now CEO of St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Warren.

David Brooks will be a featured panelist at the Becker’s Hospital Review Annual Chief Executive Officer Strategy Roundtable, taking place Nov. 1, 2012, at the Ritz Carlton Chicago.
