Survey finds uptick in IT staff layoffs

While the vast majority of healthcare provider organizations have not laid off any IT staff in the past year, a growing number of organizations have, according to a recent HIMSS Analytics survey.

In the past year, 13 percent of the 130 healthcare providers surveyed have laid off at least one IT staffer, compared with 8 percent of those surveyed the year prior. Of the 15 organizations that experienced IT layoffs, the majority (10) laid off less than five people.

The same survey found the number of providers that hired new IT staffers to dwarf the number that downsized. More than 80 percent of the organizations surveyed hired at least one new IT employee, most commonly for clinical application support.
