Study Finds Hospitals Using Advanced EMRs for Specific Benefits See Success

HIMSS Analytics and The Advisory Board have announced research findings that hospitals using advanced electronic medical records for specific quality and safety benefits see more successful outcomes.

The study collected data from 33 chief information officers from hospitals at Stage 6 or Stage 7 in their EMR implementation across the country. Hospitals with advanced EMR systems reported achieving a wide range of EMR adoption benefits, including clinical quality enhancement, patient safety improvement and operational efficiencies.

While deploying a number of benefit realization strategies, hospitals with defined benefit targets in areas such as stroke, pneumonia, surgical patients and congestive heart failure were more likely to realize those benefits.

Key findings include:
•    More than 79 percent of the respondent hospitals reported multiple core measure and/or safety benefits;
•    Seventy-three percent of respondents experienced benefits in adverse drug event reductions;
•    Fifty-eight percent of respondents experienced improvements in patient safety indicators;
•    Forty-eight percent of respondents experienced improvements in congestive heart failure metrics.
