Study: Community Hospitals Have Robust Levels of Clinical Decision Support

A broad sample of community hospitals showed robust levels of clinical decision support in their computerized provider order entry systems, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Researchers interviewed representatives from 34 community hospitals, each of which had more than five years experience with CPOE.

The authors found a strong level of CDS despite the hospitals' small size and the fact that many physician staff members were independent. The hospitals used medication alerts and order sets, developed governance procedures for CDS and employed staff to customize CDS, according to the study.
