Practice Fusion receives certification for electronic controlled substance prescriptions

Cloud-based EHR software Practice Fusion has been certified for e-prescription of controlled substances.

The San Francisco-based company now allows its providers to prescribe controlled substances directly from the system. Its 77,000 provider users in New York state, who are mandated to send all prescriptions electronically by March 27, 2016, can now comply with the Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing Act, according to a news release.

Because Practice Fusion is free, the cost of implementing an e-prescription software is removed, saving physicians the high cost of purchasing the software and training employees on it, according to the news release.

Systems are approved for EPCS through state regulatory authorities. EPCS is currently legal in 48 states and Washington, D.C. Montana and Missouri have yet to approve the process, according to Surescripts, an electronic prescription network.
