HHS Proposes New Draft Standards for Collecting Minority Health Data

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued new draft standards to improve the collection of health data by race, ethnicity, sex, primary language and disability status, according to a HHS news release.

Additionally, HHS will also being collecting health data on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations in an effort to reduce health disparities across the board, as required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

"These new data standards, once finalized, will help us target our research and tailor stronger solutions for underserved and minority communities," said HHS Director of the Office of Minority Health Garth Graham, MD, in the release. "To fully understand and meet the needs of our communities, we must first thoroughly understand who we are serving."

HHS is accepting public comments of the minority health data standards through Aug. 1.
