Health IT tip of the day: Develop an enterprise imaging strategy

In the past, medical imaging was limited to radiology and cardiology departments. But today, due to the proliferation of low-cost ultrasound devices, cameras in our smart phones and other digital imaging evolutions, it has become complex, largely unmanaged, and a hurdle healthcare CIOs are often unprepared to tackle. It is something that must be addressed, though, since imaging plays such a pivotal role in the well-being of each patient's diagnosis as well as both short- and long-term care.

Kimberly Garriott, principal consultant of healthcare strategies, for Logicalis Healthcare Solutions in New York: We're still living in the shadow of EHR projects, yet much of what we wanted to achieve is still in front of us. The development of an enterprise imaging strategy, and subsequent inclusion of all relevant clinical imaging in a single, longitudinal view within the patient's EHR, provides us an opportunity to truly improve care coordination and impact outcomes. However, thoughtful consideration and planning is critical to ensure the enabling technologies and workflow processes complement clinician workflow and do not create unintended frustrations. Involving image producing physicians and other clinicians intimately in the planning and implementation of the strategy will ensure a successful program that enhances the value of the EHR and increases caregiver satisfaction.
