Health IT Coordinator Blumenthal Pushes Back Vote on NHIN Rules

National health IT coordinator David Blumenthal, MD, has delayed a panel vote on operational rules for the nationwide health information network, according to a Government Health IT news report.

The proposed rules on NHIN governance, aimed at expanding the number of organizations that use NHIN, is slated to be published early next year, but Dr. Blumenthal is pushing back a panel vote due to lack of clarity and detail. "We need to break this into chunks and flesh them out and then prioritize them as either broadly directional or time sensitive," he said.

One of the governance panel's recommendations was the idea of establishing one body or entity to validate organizations that wish to exchange information. The body would also have the authority to settle disputes and enforce provisions, according to the report.

Other proposals include that the federal government be involved in the process of establishing conditions organizations must meet to uphold public trust and enable safe exchanges, according to the report.
