Government Health IT Panel Develops Quality Measures for Stage 2 Meaningful Use

The HHS' Health IT Policy Committee has created quality measure concepts for stage 2 of meaningful use but has not yet established specifics for incentive criteria, according to a Government Health IT news report.

The stage 2 quality measures, which take effect in 2013, will address five key issues: care coordination, patient safety, patient and family engagement, efficiency and population and public health. Although these concepts have been developed, the panel is still tasked with identifying quality measures missing from stage 1 and new and different measures that could be adopted going forward.

The panel also faces the challenge of settling difficult issues related to methods of quality measurement, such as standardized data collection and harmonization of measures across different technology platforms, according to the report.

The recommended quality measure concepts will be presented to the policy committee later this month.
