Google awards health texting app CareMessage $2.3M

San Francisco-based CareMessage, a health texting organization, has been granted $6 million in funding since November.

The company received $2.3 million from Google in December, and $3.7 million in its first round of fundraising in November, with $1.5 million from the Pershing Square Foundation, who lead the round.

The nonprofit company provides at-risk patients with text and voice messaging campaigns for health literacy and disease self-management. The multilingual behavior change programs, which last one year or four to six weeks, address a variety needs: nutrition, smoking cessation, medication management, diabetes, congestive heart failure, maternal health and mental health, among others. It helps patients understand test results, track blood glucose or other metrics and self-manage certain aspects of their conditions.

The organization serves 200,000 patients in 16 states at systems including Stanford (Calif.) Health Care and Chicago-based Sinai Health System, according to the report.
