GAO: HHS Wasted $260M on Duplicate Technology Investments

A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office has identified six potentially duplicative investments at HHS, totaling $260.4 million in spending between 2008 and 2013.

Four of the six potentially duplicative projects at HHS revolved around enterprise information security. These projects, accounting for $256.4 million of the total $260.4 million outlay called into question by the report, may have been redundant as separate systems were procured to address similar issues and may have overlapped in protection. The other two projects, Medicare's National Coverage Determination and Local Coverage Determination databases, were potentially redundant as they collect and distribute similar information but are maintained separately.

HHS officials deny the investments were unnecessary or duplicative, but have plans to review spending and identify areas for consolidation.
