Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs' Open-Source EHR Bad News for Vendors

The Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are creating their electronic health record system using open-source software, which may create competition for EHR vendors, according to a Washington Post report.

Open-source software is publicly available, meaning healthcare organizations could access the VA-Defense EHR open-source software for free and then pay companies to modify the code to fit their specific needs. Hospitals' ability to modify free EHR frameworks could deal a blow to vendors such as Epic Systems and Cerner that sell entire EHR systems.
