AMIA Releases Position Statement on Meaningful Use

The American Medical Informatics Association has sent comments to the Office of the National Coordinator on Health IT regarding meaningful use and the HIT Policy Committee's proposed requirements for stage 2, according to a news release.

Among some of AMIA's suggestions, the association recommended research criteria and clinical care criteria be included in stage 2. AMIA also recommended that the HITPC continue to consider options for Population Health/Public Health Criteria for meaningful use in an ongoing effort to advance quality outcomes and improvements.

AMIA President and CEO Edward H. Shortliffe, MD, said AMIA members are concerned that EHR- and EHR module-testing may fall short of ensuring that HIT systems reliably provide effective cognitive support to users in clinical settings. AMIA members would also like to see systematic testing and evaluation of HIT systems that demonstrate achievement of meaningful use, improved quality of care and interoperability.
