Proposed state budget cuts could eliminate positions at Minnesota Security Hospital

Minnesota Security Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in St. Peter, may have to cut staff if the House's proposed budget passes, according to a St. Peter Herald report.

Here are four things to know.

1. The Minnesota House's proposed budget would reduce funding for the state's department of human services by $600 million, according to the report. The state Senate's proposed budget would cut the department's funding by $335 million.

2. Minnesota Rep. Clark Johnson, D-North Mankato, claims the House budget proposal would result in the elimination of 44 positions at MSH, and stall funds needed for safety improvements at the facility, the report states.

3. Occupational Safety and Health Administration data cited in the report shows more than 100 staff injuries from assaults at MSH in 2015.

4. Both Minnesota chambers will have to find consensus before a final budget passes.
