PBMC gifted $5M to establish cardiac program

Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, N.Y., received a $5 million donation for its comprehensive cardiac program, one of the largest gifts in the hospital's history.

The John and Elaine Kanas Family Foundation, based in Melville, N.Y., gave the donation Monday at PBMC's Golf Classic at Sebonack Golf Club.

PBMC will use the funds to establish eastern Long Island's first comprehensive cardiac program, the hospital said.

The cardiac program is part of PBMC's $60 million critical care tower project, which also includes a two-story expansion of the current emergency department. The cardiac program will include catheterization labs, an electrophysiology suite, recovery rooms and an 18-bed intensive care/cardiac care unit.

The critical care tower will be created in partnership with New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, formerly known as the North Shore-LIJ Health System, which PBMC joined in January.
