OIG recovers $2.77B from providers in first half of FY 2016

For the first six months of fiscal year 2016, HHS' Office of the Inspector General has reported expected recoveries of more than $2.77 billion, according to the OIG's semiannual report to Congress.

The first half of the fiscal year stemmed October 2015 through March 2016.

Below are four findings from the report.

1. Expected recoveries is comprised of nearly $554.7 million in audit receivables and about $2.22 billion in investigative receivables, which includes about $336.6 million in non-HHS investigative receivables, such as state's shares of Medicaid reimbursement.

2. The OIG reported 428 criminal actions against individuals or entities that engaged in crimes against HHS programs. It filed 383 civil actions, which includes false claims and unjust-enrichment lawsuits filed in federal district court, civil money penalties and administrative recoveries.

3. Civil money penalty recoveries have increased almost five fold during the past three years.

4. OIG barred 1,662 individuals and entities from participating in federal healthcare programs.
