Case over Illinois' unpaid Medicaid bills drags on

An attorney representing about three million Medicaid recipients in Illinois said this week discussions will continue regarding an increase in Medicaid funding to providers amid the state's budget impasse, reports Reuters.

U.S. District Court Judge Joan Lefkow on June 7 ordered Illinois, which owes $2 billion in unpaid Medicaid payments, to increase Medicaid funding and comply with federal consent decrees on the program.

The judge ordered both sides to file motions by Tuesday if a negotiated solution was not reached to put Illinois in compliance with the decrees, according to the report.

However, neither side indicated plans to file such motions before the deadline.

Tom Yates, executive director of legal council for Health Justice, who is representing Illinois Medicaid recipients, and Illinois Attorney General's office spokesperson Eileen Boyce told Reuters discussions continue, and they have no plans to file a motion Tuesday.

A court status hearing is slated to take place June 28, according to the report.
