Carthage Area Hospital posts first profit since 2009

Carthage (N.Y.) Area Hospital recorded positive profit margins for the first time in seven years, according to WWNYTV.

The last time the hospital posted a profit was in 2009; however, in 2016 the hospital made more than $400,000 in operations alone, according to the report which cited a recent audit.

Hospital administration attributes the profit to the restructuring that occurred in 2013, which involved Carthage Area Hospital closing clinics, laying off workers, and cutting down bed counts. Since the restructuring, many workers were offered their jobs back.

"We made responsible decisions in order to preserve the hospital," hospital marketing director Taylour Scanlin told WWNY. "The hospital's gone through a lot, but most importantly we want to ensure that the hospital stays here for years to come."
