BMC HealthNet dropping Berkshire Health Systems

Contract negotiations between Boston Medical Center's HealthNet, a Medicaid-managed care plan, and Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Health Systems have ended with no new contract in place, according to a WAMC report.

The current agreement between the two parties expires May 15.

A Berkshire Health Systems' spokesman told WAMC that the system was disappointed in BMC HealthNet's decision to terminate its coverage for the system's patients.

Kevin Klein, BMC Health Net's chief marketing and sales officer, told WAMC the negotiations between the two parties failed because of the financial pressures BMC HealthNet has been under for more than a year. "We and all Medicaid-managed care plans for the most part operating in the state lost significant amounts of money last year. Our organization lost $44 million," Mr. Klein told WAMC.

BHS has notified patients affected by the change.
