3 things hospitals should know about bundled payments and the OR

Bundled payments frequently motivate hospitals to root out waste in their systems and improve efficiency, particularly so in the operating room. That means this new payment model is poised to directly affect surgeon reimbursement more so than other models.

Getting in line with bundled payments can help boost OR throughput, lower lengths of stay and — ultimately — reduce costs, but hospitals can work with their surgeons to make bundled services profitable too.

That said, hospitals should:

  • Develop a better understanding of the link between bundled payments, perioperative inefficiency and the indirect costs that can make bundled payment financially unsustainable
  • Understand how surgeons and hospital leaders need to collaborate to control both direct and indirect costs to optimize bundled payments; and
  • Maximize revenue for both hospitals and surgeons by identifying opportunities to improve perioperative efficiency

To learn more about these things and more, please join us for a webinar Wednesday, Aug. 26, hosted by Becker's Hospital Review and featuring both Alecia Torrance, RN, senior vice president of clinical operations for Surgical Directions, and Joseph Bosco, MD, vice chairman for clinical affairs at the New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases' Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
