13 standout healthcare CFOs

Hospital and health system CFOs are agents of change within their organizations. Many are deeply involved in strategic decisions and also have knowledge about the day-to-day operations of the business that no other members of the C-suite possess.

Here are 13 CFOs who stand out in their roles at hospitals and health systems across the nation.

Chris Bergman is vice president and CFO of The Christ Hospital Health Network, based in Cincinnati. He came to The Christ Hospital in 2008. He previously served as CFO of Lansing, Mich.-based Sparrow Health System. He also previously served as vice president of finance at Englewood, Colo.-based Centura Health.

Larry Cash is president of financial services and CFO of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems. He has been CHS' CFO since 1997. Prior to joining CHS, Mr. Cash held executive level finance positions at a number of companies, including major health insurer Humana.

Steven Glass is treasurer and CFO of Cleveland Clinic. Beginning his career with Cleveland Clinic in 2002 as the system's controller and chief accounting officer, he was promoted to CFO in 2005. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Mr. Glass served as vice president and chief accounting officer of Columbia, Mo.-based MedStar Health.

Donald Halliwill is assistant treasurer, assistant vice president and CFO of Carilion Clinic, based in Roanoke, Va. He has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare. Mr. Halliwill joined Carilion Clinic in 1997, and he was named CFO in 2013. He earned his MBA from Wake Forest University.

Pam Hess is CFO of Saint Thomas Midtown and Saint Thomas West Hospitals in Nashville, Tenn. She was named CFO of Saint Thomas West Hospital in 2012 and appointed CFO of Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital in 2014. Ms. Hess previously served as CFO of Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Kathy Lancaster is executive vice president of strategy and CFO of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Health Plan in Oakland, Calif. She joined Kaiser Permanente in 1998 and was promoted to CFO of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Health Plan in 2005. Prior to joining Kaiser, Ms. Lancaster held a number of senior leadership roles in underwriting and network management for Prudential Insurance Company's western region.

Daniel Morissette is the CFO of Stanford (Calif.) Health Care, formerly Stanford Hospital & Clinics. He has been with the organization since 2007. Before joining Stanford Health Care, Mr. Morissette served as senior vice president of finance and strategy at the University of Toledo (Ohio). He also previously served as senior vice president of Chicago Medical School. He is a certified public accountant and earned his MBA in finance and policy study from the University of Chicago.

John Orsini is senior vice president and CFO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare in Chicago. He previously served as executive vice president and CFO of Cadence Health in Winfield, Ill. He began his current position following the merger of Northwestern and Cadence in 2014. He is a certified public accountant.

Richard Rothberger is corporate executive vice president and CFO of San Diego-based Scripps Health.He joined Scripps in 2001. Since coming to Scripps, he has led the system through a $120 million financial turnaround. Scripps saw its revenue, operating income and net income all increase last quarter, which ended March 31. Mr. Rothberger has a master's degree in industrial engineering/health systems from Northeastern University and is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the Health Management Academy.

William Rutherford is executive vice president and CFO of Hospital Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn. He began his current role in 2014, but he has been with HCA for more than 25 years. Mr. Rutherford has a number of duties as CFO, including managing HCA's treasury department, office of the controller and strategic resource group, among others.

Fred Savelsberg is CFO of Baylor Scott & White, based in Dallas, a position he began in 2014 when the system was formed. He previously served as CFO of Baylor Health Care System, a system he has been with for his entire 30-plus year career.

Robert Shapiro is senior vice president and CFO of Great Neck, N.Y.-based North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. He has been North Shore-LIJ's CFO since 2000, but he joined the system in 1984. Mr. Shapiro held various roles at the system before being named CFO, including vice president of financial operations and director or finance/assistant administrator. Mr. Shapiro is a certified public accountant and a fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Gary Weiss is executive vice president, treasurer and CFO of NorthShore University HealthSystem, based in Evanston, Ill. He joined the system in 2001 and was named CFO in October 2007. Prior to joining NorthShore, he was in the banking and financial sector. He spent 26 years at The First National Bank of Chicago and its affiliate organizations, where he held various roles, including CFO and chief accounting officer of the commercial business line.
