MedStar Georgetown University Hospital to build $567M surgical pavilion by 2021

Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Georgetown University Hospital last week received approval from D.C.'s Zoning Commission to go ahead with its planned $567 million surgical pavilion, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Officials expect to break ground in January 2018, about a year after they initially hoped to begin construction. The project is now slated to be done in 2021.

The 477,000-square foot, six-story surgical pavilion will encompass an expanded emergency department, two floors of operating rooms and three patient care units, according to the report. It will also include advanced imaging services, a helipad and 644 parking spaces.

After completion of the pavilion, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's total number of beds will increase from 415 to 538. The hospital's surgical and emergency services will be consolidated in the new facility, while kitchen, environmental services, IT, biomedical engineering, security and the morgue will continue to operate in the original building, according to the report.
