NHL player donates more than $300K to Florida hospital

Aleksander Barkov, who plays for the NHL's Florida Panthers, has donated more than $300,000 to Hollywood, Fla.-based Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, NHL.com reported.

The Panthers' captain pledged to give $1,600 for every goal he scores (in honor of his jersey number, 16) and $800 for every assist he accumulates, according to the story. He dropped off his latest check totaling $97,600 on Oct. 17.

"I love what they are doing here. I love helping them. I love bringing kids to the games, visiting here, seeing kids here," Mr. Barkov said at a donation ceremony covered by NHL.com.

Besides the annual donation, the hockey center also pays for a suite at the Panther's stadium in Sunrise, Fla., each season to host Joe DiMaggio Children's patients, their families, physicians and nurses at games, the website reported. The section is known as Barky's Buddies.
