Total compensation costs for hospital employees crept up 0.5 percent in the first quarter of 2011, an increase slightly below that of all private industry workers, according to a HealthLeadersMedia report.
The report, based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed that total compensation in the healthcare sector grew by 2 percent for the 12-month period ending March 31. This equals the growth in compensation for all private industry workers for the same period.
According to the report, wages and salaries for the hospital sector, which generally represent around 70 percent of total compensation costs, jumped 0.3 percent in the first quarter of the year and 1.7 percent in the 12-month period ending March 31. This increase is slightly higher than the 1.6 percent increase for the overall private industry.
