California District Hospital CEOs Earn Less Than Leaders at Other Non-Profit Hospitals

CEOs of California public district hospitals earn significantly lower average salaries than their counterparts at other types of non-profit hospitals, according to data released by the office of State Controller John Chiang and reports from Payers & Providers.

The discrepancy, reported in California Healthline, may be due to facility size or the addition of bonuses, car stipends and other taxable income into salary calculations. According to the data, CEOs of district hospitals earned an average $230,876 in base compensation and an average $245,947 in overall compensation in 2009.

CEOs at non-profit California hospitals, excluding district hospitals, earned an average $514,237 in base compensation and an average $732,004 in overall compensation, according to 2007 and 2008 data from Payers & Providers.
