25 medical resident salaries by specialty

Between 2014 and 2015, the average medical resident saw a slight salary increase from $55,300 to $55,400, according to Medscape's 2015 Residents Salary & Debt Report.

The Medscape report includes data from more than 1,700 medical residents in 24 specialties who took part in an online survey from May 14 through June 22. All of the participants were enrolled in a U.S. medical resident program when they took the survey.

Highlighted below are 25 average medical resident salaries, listed by specialty.

1. Critical care — $62,000

2. Oncology — $61,000

3. Pulmonary medicine — $61,000

4. Cardiology — $60,000

5. Gastroenterology — $59,000

6. Plastic surgery — $58,000

7. Surgery (general or specialized) — $57,000

8. Radiology — $57,000

9. Endocrinology — $57,000

10. Diabetes & metabolism — $57,000

11. Pathology — $57,000

12. Psychiatry — $56,000

13. Obstetrics/gynecology — $56,000

14. Dermatology — $56,000

15. Neurology — $56,000

16. Pediatrics — $55,000

17. Emergency medicine — $55,000

18. Anesthesiology — $55,000

19. Orthopedics — $54,000

20. Ophthalmology — $54,000

21. Physical medicine & rehabilitation — $54,000

22. Otolaryngology — $54,000

23. Urology — $54,000

24. Internal medicine — $53,000

25. Family/general medicine — $53,000
