Hospital controllers, often the next-in-line for CFO duties, earned almost $110,000 in total compensation a few years back, according to the Healthcare Financial Management Association's 2011 compensation survey.

HFMA polled 244 hospital controllers about their salary and compensation. Here are 15 statistics on hospital controller compensation from the survey.

Average annual salary: $105,100
Average cash compensation: $109,600
Median cash compensation: $101,900
Average bonus or profit-sharing: $8,600
Percentage eligible for bonuses or profit-sharing: 52 percent

Average controller compensation by hospital size
58 beds or less: $81,000
59 to 132 beds: $91,100
135 to 249 beds: $106,000
250 beds or more: $147,500
System, headquarters or regional level: $136,600

Specialized hospital controller compensation data
Average compensation of controllers who are CPAs: $121,900
Average compensation of controllers with a graduate degree: $114,000
Average compensation of male controllers: $120,000
Average compensation of female controllers: $100,000
Average compensation of controllers with 17 years or more experience in healthcare: $121,300
