Report: Mental Health, Substance Use Inpatient Admissions Increased

From 2010 to 2011, inpatient admissions for substance use increased 19.5 percent and mental health admissions increased 5.9 percent, according to a Health Care Cost Institute report.

The report, "The Impact of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act on Inpatient Admissions," examined the effect on healthcare costs and utilization of the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which aimed to increase access to mental health and substance use services.

Here are some key findings for 2010 to 2011 from the report:

•    Per capital spending on mental health inpatient admissions increased 11.7 percent.
•    Per capital spending on substance use inpatient admissions increased 28.9 percent.
•    The average length of stay for mental health admissions increased 0.8 percent.
•    The average length of stay for substance use admissions increased 4.3 percent.
