CMS Launches Demo to Test Whether Clinical Support Systems Result in Appropriate Imaging Use

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has selected five health systems to help test whether clinical decision support systems result in appropriate use of imaging services, according to an American Medical News report.

The two-year demonstration will include physician practices recruited by Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, along with Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Maine Medical Center-Physician Hospital Organization in Portland, National Imaging Associates in Avon, Conn., and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

When imaging is ordered fee-for-service for Medicare beneficiaries in these practices, decision support systems will provide feedback to physicians on whether the tests are appropriate for patients. This feedback will be based on clinical guidelines endorsed by medical specialty societies.

The 11 imaging procedures that will be targeted in the demonstration include:
• Spect MPI
• MRI lumbar spine
• CT lumbar spine
• MRI brain
• CT brain
• CT sinus
• CT thorax
• CT abdomen
• CT pelvis
• MRI knee
• MRI shoulder
