University Hospitals, BCBS launch ACO

Cleveland-based University Hospitals partnered with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in the health system's fourth accountable care organization agreement with a commercial insurer, according to Crain's Cleveland Business.

The new ACO will include more than 2,000 independent and UH-employed primary care providers and specialists. The organizations plan to analyze data on quality, cost and utilization to determine where they can improve care coordination and lower costs.

University Hospitals already formed ACOs with Cigna Healthcare, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna and provides accountable care for employees, pediatric patients and Medicare patients, according to the report. University Hospitals is one of the nation's largest ACO providers. More than 250,000 of its patients receive care from an ACO, according to the report.
