Security Health Plan exec: Post-pandemic reengagement must include collaboration, innovation with health systems

Payer-provider collaboration during the pandemic needs to turn the corner to uphold innovation and improve care, said Krista Hoglund, chief actuary and financial officer of Security Health Plan.

Ms. Hoglund said the insurer has seen pandemic-era successes as partnered health systems bring new ideas to the table that can be included in contract discussions. Ultimately, leveraging innovative care and payer support is a crucial step in tackling preventive care and healthcare affordability.

Krista Hoglund: Whether it is support and treatment for chronic conditions or preventive services and screenings, that's something that both the provider and the payer can both be aligned around because we think that it is really important that patients and members get those services. That's something that's easy for us to collaborate about. Then it's also a place where we can be innovative in making sure those needs are met.

In 2020, we worked and talked with our provider systems about sending test kits home so that the patients could at least get the screening. That's going to become really important for the future. We wanted to make sure we were going to catch something if somebody was developing a new condition or a current condition was being exacerbated throughout the pandemic. And so that's been a really bright spot as we've moved forward over the last six months — the fact that we are getting that collaboration, but also that providers are willing to be innovative with us and how we meet the needs of our patients.
