Minnesota insurer botches premium prices in letter to 21,000 members

UCare, a health insurer based in Minneapolis, sent letters to about 21,000 policyholders listing erroneous premium prices, according to the Star Tribune.

Here are three things to know:

1. The letter, sent to Medicare beneficiaries with supplemental dental benefits, made it appear as if members were being charged an extra $21 per month for their coverage. The letter containing the error is an annual notification sent to beneficiaries who pay for their premiums through an electronic bank transfer or the Social Security program.

2. UCare said the mistake, which double-counted the $21 monthly premium for dental coverage, did not lead to any incorrect payments to the health insurer.

3. Ghita Worcester, UCare's senior vice president, told the Star Tribune: "We're in the process of getting a corrected letter out to folks along with an apology for the letter that was sent with the error in the amount on it. Of course, you never want to have something like that happen, but the member did not have any amount taken from their accounts in error."
