BCBS of North Carolina invests $3.2M into UNC food insecurity study

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is contributing $3.2 million to a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UNC Health Alliance study on food insecurity and people with hypertension. 

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina also will be contributing to the study with its team of data scientists and analysts, according to UNC Health.

The results of the study will be used to aid Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina members who suffer from food insecurity and high blood pressure, according to study co-leader Darren DeWalt, MD, a physician with UNC Health.

Between 2021 and 2023, the study will recruit 1,400 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina members who are food insecure and have hypertension. Results are expected to be revealed in 2024.
