Western Health Advantage payer to extend coverage to Bay Area

Sacramento, Calif.-based Western Health Advantage will extend its coverage to counties in the San Francisco Bay Area after inking an agreement with provider network Canopy Health, according to the Sacramento Bee.

"The Sacramento region and the San Francisco region have now really become one mega-region," said Gerry Maisel, CEO of Western Health Advantage. "People commute from the Bay to Sacramento for jobs. They commute from Sacramento to the Bay for jobs. It makes sense to be able to cover people who live in both areas because that's how the business world does business now in this area."

Canopy Health includes more than 4,000 physicians and 12 hospitals throughout the Bay Area, including providers in the UCSF Health and John Muir Health networks. Western has served counties north of San Francisco for roughly four years, with about 15 percent of its customers living in the area.
