Cigna CFO to retire: 5 things to know

Thomas McCarthy, CFO of Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna, will retire this summer.

Here are five things to know.

1. Mr. McCarthy has served as executive vice president and CFO of Cigna since July 2013. He has almost 40 years of healthcare experience and has spent 33 years with Cigna.

2. Eric Palmer, CFO of Cigna's global health, Cigna-HealthSpring, employer-based healthcare, group and supplemental insurance businesses, will succeed Mr. McCarthy. 

3. Mr. Palmer has been with Cigna for 20 years. He previously served as the insurer's business financial officer for U.S. healthcare and U.S. commercial markets. 

4. Mr. Palmer will join the insurer's enterprise leadership team this summer as deputy CFO. The leadership team reports directly to Cigna President and CEO David Cordani.

5. Three other executives were named to the executive team:

Christopher Hocevar joins the leadership team as president of strategy, segments and solutions. He has been with Cigna for 14 years. For the last several years, Mr. Hocevar has led Cigna's select segment and pharmacy benefits management business.

Michael Triplett joins the executive team as president of U.S. markets. Mr. Triplett was most recently president of the regional market segment. He has been with Cigna for 18 years.

Alan Muney joins the enterprise leadership team in his continued role as Cigna's CMO and lead for the payer's total health and network operation. He has been with Cigna for seven years. Prior to joining Cigna, he was executive director at The Blackstone Group, a New York City-based global asset manager, where he was CEO and founder of Equity Healthcare.
