1 in 6 sick Americans could see 'extremely high premiums' under AHCA

Roughly one-sixth of elderly or ill Americans could face "extremely high premiums" under the House-approved American Health Care Act, according to the Congressional Budget Office's score of the bill released Wednesday.

Here are three things to know.

1. These Americans will likely see high premiums in spite of additional funding earmarked in the bill to offset the increases, according to Kaiser Health News.

2. The CBO's score includes a recent amendment to the AHCA made by Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., which calls for states to be able to waive certain provisions of the ACA, like requiring insurers to cover essential health benefits and individuals with preexisting conditions.

3. The CBO said if states waive those provisions, "the nongroup market would start to become unstable beginning in 2020" and "people who are less healthy (including those with preexisting or newly acquired medical conditions) would ultimately be unable to purchase comprehensive nongroup health insurance at premiums comparable to those under current law, if they could purchase it at all."
