Physician who performed surgery into his 90s dies at 97

James Woodburn II, MD, a Ventura, Calif., physician who worked in the operating room into his 90s, died Feb. 28 at 97, the VC Star reported March 21.

Dr. Woodburn joined Community Memorial Hospital and Ventura County Medical Center in 1972, where he practiced surgery for nearly 50 years and more than 20 years, respectively. He continued to assist in the operating room until age 94.

Dr. Woodburn died three months after being diagnosed with lung and bone cancer. He leaves behind three sons, a daughter, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
