More than 30% of hospitals can't find enough qualified job candidates: 5 takeaways

A new survey reveals hospitals are struggling to find qualified job candidates for roles such as nurses, physicians and leadership.

Leaders For Today, a national healthcare interim and permanent staffing company, initiated the survey last December. More than 200 hospital leaders from facilities of various sizes and locations participated in the survey.

Here are five takeaways from the survey.

1. When asked to summarize their organization's recruiting situation, 30.8 percent of respondents said they can't find a sufficient number of candidates — 23.9 percent of respondents said their candidate searches involved a "quick turnaround," but included unqualified candidates.

2. Only 5 percent of respondents said their organization has "great" ability to locate good people in a reasonable timeframe. In contrast, more than half of survey participants (51.6 percent) rated their organization's ability to identify good candidates as "not very good." Additionally, 35.2 percent of respondents gave a "good" rating, and 8.2 percent gave a "poor" rating.

3. Thirty-nine percent of survey participants said it takes four to six months, on average, to fill leadership positions (manager or above). Thirty-one percent said it takes seven to 12 months, and 24 percent said one to three months.

4. At hospitals with 251 to 1,000-plus beds, nearly 77 percent of recruiters, on average, are asked to manage 10 searches at a time compared to approximately 44 percent at hospitals with up to 100 beds.

5. Additionally, the survey found issues with turnover, with 37 percent of candidates planning to no longer be with their current hospital within two years.
