Missouri turnover rate for hospital jobs climbs nearly 2%

Kelly Gooch -

Missouri's combined employee turnover for 25 hospital positions reached 17.7 percent in 2018, up from 16 percent the year prior, according to a workforce report from the Missouri Hospital Association.

This year's report found hospital professions with the highest employee turnover were housekeeper (30.5 percent); nurse assistants (29.8 percent); certified pharmacy technician (21.6 percent); licensed practical nurse (19.5 percent); and CT technologist (17 percent). Bedside registered nurse was also included in the top 10 hospital professions with the highest employee turnover at 16 percent.

While overall vacancies have decreased for most of  the 25 hospital positions surveyed, some  positions are poised for demand in the future, according to the report. Hospital positions with the highest employee vacancy in 2018 were bedside registered nurse (13.3 percent); nurse practitioner (12.6 percent); CT technologist (12 percent); nuclear medicine technologist (10.9 percent); and licensed practical nurse (10.6 percent).

"Hospitals can proactively address workforce vacancy and turnover by finding new and creative ways to improve recruitment and retention, address the challenges of retirement, and implement effective onboarding strategies to help new workers adapt to the workplace culture," the report authors wrote. "In addition, by establishing local workforce partnerships to recruit, educate and train the next generation of students and elevate existing staff in high-demand fields, hospitals can mitigate staffing challenges in the healthcare sector."
