Memorial Sloan Kettering lays off 337 employees

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is laying off 337 employees to reduce costs amid widespread hospital financial challenges, according to a U.S. Department of Labor filing.

The layoffs equate to about 1.8 percent of Memorial Sloan's 22,500 workforce, a slight drop from the 3 percent that was previously reported.

"These roles span multiple departments and levels," a spokesperson for Memorial Sloan Kettering told Becker's. "This reduction was necessary to ensure that MSK can continue to invest in the future of cancer care, research and education for the benefit of generations to come and every effort has been made to ensure that patient care is not impacted."

The layoffs are spread across 14 sites in New York City, according to a Jan. 17 Warn notice filing.

The Warn Act is a labor law that protects employees and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more staff to provide 60 calendar-day advance notification of planned closings and mass layoffs.

The employees were notified of their termination on Jan. 17. They are not represented by a union, according to the filing.
