Illinois hospital association to lose longest serving employee

Kelly Gooch -

Normandie (Norm) Brown, the Illinois Health and Hospital Association's longest serving employee, will retire Jan. 31, the association announced.

Ms. Brown, 80, a supervisor of administrative services, has spent nearly 60 years with the association.

She initially became involved with the association in May 1961. At the time, the association's offices were inside the American Hospital Association's Chicago headquarters, and Ms. Brown worked in a three-person typing pool.

Ms. Brown said the job was a good fit since she worked in the Army as a telegraph operator and assistant in the administrative services department, according to the association.

Ms. Brown stayed with the association when it moved to Oak Brook in 1975 and then Naperville in 1982. Her role changed over the years, and she eventually oversaw the ordering of office supplies. Officials said she also maintained office equipment and supervised mailroom services and offsite storage.

In a news release, Ms. Brown, who raised two sons, attributed her long tenure with the association to its employee benefits, which "had more flexibility compared to other organizations."

"And I liked the job, and the job liked me," she added.

When she retires, she said she anticipates "recharging her body" and volunteering.
