The healthcare industry added 20,600 jobs in January, with hospitals contributing 12,700 to that total, according to Friday's jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This is less than the industry's average monthly gain of 24,000 jobs in 2017, according to the BLS. It is also less than the 31,400 jobs the industry added in December.

Hospitals showed the biggest employment growth in healthcare last month, adding 12,700 jobs compared with the 12,400 they added the month prior. Ambulatory healthcare services came next, adding 7,700 jobs in January.

Overall, U.S. employment rose by 200,000 last month, according to the BLS.
