Dignity Health hospital presents award for police, fire departments' 'humankindness'

Long Beach, Calif.-based Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center awarded its first "Spirit of St. Mary's Award" to the city's police and fire departments Dec. 9.

The award was presented to Long Beach Chief of Police Wally Hebeish and Fire Chief Xavier Espino for their respective departments, according to a news release shared with Becker's

The award was created to honor people who live out San Francisco-based Dignity Health's tagline, "humankindness."

"The idea behind the word [humankindness] is simple and yet immensely profound," Michael Neils, the hospital's chief philanthropy officer, said during the award ceremony. "Every human person is a unity of body, mind, and spirit. This means that every person has the power and potential to bring healing to others."
